Class Discussion Rules

Respect and Order for our Classroom Discussions

If you play a sport, then you know very well how important it is to have a set of rules to follow. It makes the game fun and interesting, instead of it being confusing and frustrating. The same thing applies to discussion.

In order for us to have productive conversations about the things we read, we have to have some rules.

Rule #1: Respect all points of view –

People see the world in different ways, and this will affect the way that they read and interpret

things. No idea is a “stupid” idea. You will treat each person’s opinion as you would want your

            own to be treated.

      Rule #2: Participate –

First, I go over the following handout - Class Discussion Rules (Rules and grading rubric) with the students, so they are very clear about the expectations of a "graded discussion". The worksheet that I use is the Discussion Organizer and students must fill it out during the discussion, and turn it in at the end for credit.

Venn Diagram - This works as a fun grammar activity, but also a good "get-to-know-you" game near the start of the year.

Split the class into pairs. Have each pair create a Venn Diagram showing their personal differences and similarities (Two circles - outsides are differences, and where they overlap are similarities). To incorporate grammar, give guidelines about the types of things that can be listed on either side.

For example, while teaching the perfect tenses, you could require that all information be given in perfect tense - So a completed Venn Diagram might have lists that look something like this:
