Mr. Nelson        Biology I         50 Minutes

Objective:

The student will identify the main components of the water cycle (Biology, 7.a)

The student will investigate the effects of acid rain on the environment (Biology, 7)

Bell Work: Quiz on the previous days lesson.

Set: Crucial to our existence, water sustains all life on Earth. How does our drinking water fit into this picture? Where did this water come from, what do we know about it? Listen to answers. Where did the water we drink fall as precipitation? Did this water percolate down into the ground as part of a groundwater system, or did it remain on the surface as part of a surface water system? What path did this water follow in order to become our drinking water? Talk about the age of the water..this could be some of the same water that dinosaurs drank from millions of years ago. This is because water is constantly moving throughout our atmosphere. Today we will examine the pathway of water. State objectives.

Procedure:

1.    Go over the water cycle overhead

2.    Show water cycle on board and verbally review.

3.    Introduce the concept of acid rain – who has heard of it? Acid rain is an issue because of the cyclic nature of water.

4.    Acid rain reading activity (acid rain handout)

5.    Acid rain sharing activity on the board.

a.    Students should place the main ideas of their section on the board in bullet point format. Main sections: Sources (done as class) Effects of Acid Rain, and Solutions.

Closure: Verbally review the content and preview the next lesson (carbon and oxygen cycles).

Assessment:

Objective: The student will identify the main components of the water cycle (Biology, 7.a)

Formal: The student will record (M) notes on the components of the water cycle (C).  Notes will be collected and graded for accuracy at the end of the week (D).

Informal: The teacher will verbally review (M) the main concepts of the water cycle (C) with the students.

Objective The student will investigate the effects of acid rain on the environment (Biology, 7)

Formal: The student will complete a reading activity (M) geared towards the effects of acid rain (C). Work will be collected, graded, and recorded in the grade book (D)

Informal: The teacher will observe student progress (M) on the acid rain reading activity (C).
