Set: Mr. Caputo has already taught yall some examples of irony correct? Can someone refresh my memory on what is irony? Today we are going to start a story about a young couple in love and look at how irony can be a very powerful writing tool and how it might affect the theme of a story. Before we start, does anyone know what the word “magi” refers to? Some of yall might be more familiar with another name they are known by, the 3 wise men. What did the 3 wise men do? What were their gifts? What did their gifts symbolize? Lets see why this story might be called the gift of the magi.
Procedures:
1) Pass out story, pass out study guide.
2) Review plot structure (be ready to fill out diagram on study guide)
3) Review simile and metaphor, be on the look out in the story.
4) Define vocabulary as we go along in the story using context clues.
5) After stopping, take out piece of paper and make predictions on what will happen. Make sure through question 5 on study guide.
Closure: (Depending on how far class can get in story together). So where is the simile in the passage we read so far? Based on what has happened so far, do you think this couple is going to have a happy ending? Why or why not? Where are we in the plot sequence? Have we reached the climax yet? Friday we will pick back up and finish the story and see if yall’s predictions are right.
