7th and 8th Grade English

Period 4

June 23, 2008

Objectives: TSW recognize and outline sequential order and plot structure of text, ranging from introduction, to climax, to conclusion. (English 2.d.3, DOK 3)

Materials: three-ring binder, pen, paper, handout, “Literature” Text.

Set: Does anyone know the story of the three little pigs or any other folk-tale? What happens in it? Look at plot similarities and how each story/tale/movie has same structure (intro > climax > resolution).

Procedures:

1)Do Now: Three Little Pigs as intro to the plot structure.

2) Define exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

3)Look at how this model fits into famous movies/TV shows that they like. Give examples of each factor within a well known movie.  Three little pigs.

4)Turn in the Literature text to the “Tell-Tale Heart” on page 835 and read it aloud.

5) The students will then analyze the story for the elements of structure according to Freytag's Pyramid.

Closure: We have reviewed the basic structure for every form of story telling imaginable. Whether it be TV show, movie, fairy tale, story, anything you can think of, this is our basic format. Without a conflict, stories and characters are boring. Must have conflict and turning point for the story to move. Flow.
