BIOLOGY LABORATORY SAFETY RULES.doc
Bell-work: List 5 rules or procedures that keep people safe (traffic laws, kitchen safety, sports rules, safety equipment, etc.)
Set: Have students discuss bell-work. Today we’ll be discussing the safety rules for the biology lab. We won’t actually go into the lab today, but if we do later, you’ll need to remember these. Most of them are common sense, and aren’t much different from safety rules you might follow at the swimming pool, in the kitchen, or driving a car.
Procedure:
1. Pass out the Biology Lab Safety Rules handout to each student.
2. Pass out the Safety Symbols handout to each student.
3. Have students take turns reading the rules to each other, and ask them why that rule makes sense and if it is similar to any other rules they follow in other places.
4. Go over the safety symbols handout with the students. They should put a star next to the following symbols, which are most common and most important: biological/biohazard; radioactivity, eye safety, toxic, chemical (corrosive, caustic).
5. Draw similar symbols for corrosive or caustic and explain that these are chemicals that damage materials and tissue.
6. Laptop should be prepared to show Unblowuppable Lab Safety Power Point. Explain that this is a presentation that shows us a lot of what not to do by showing Homer Simpson.
7. Proceed through the presentation. At the part that says “Pop Quiz,” have students write down their answers or call on them and reward correct answers.
8. Ask students if they have any questions before we start a Lab Safety Quiz.
9. Pass out the Lab Safety Quizzes. Students will have 10 minutes to complete them silently.
10. After 10 minutes, have students stop and collect their quizzes.
11. Review the questions verbally with students.
12. If there is extra time remaining, students may complete their Lab Equipment Posters.
Closure: Have students go through the list of Biology Lab Rules and describe other rules or safety precautions for places outside of school. For example, wearing pads in football.
Assessment:
Informal- verbal questioning during power point and discussion of lab rules.
Formal- the lab safety quiz will be graded and recorded in the gradebook.
