ALGEBRA I LESSON PLAN
HOLLY SPRINGS SUMMER SCHOOL 2008
Date: 6/23/08
Period:
1st-2nd-3rd-4th
Teacher: Mr. Nastrom
Time: 50 minutes
A. OBJECTIVE
Apply concepts of functions to identify how a change in the independent variable affects the dependent variable. (Algebra I - 2d, DOK2)
B. MATERIALS
dry erase markers; dry eraser; pencils & paper; transparencies;
Algebra I, Concepts and Applications (2001), Foster et al.
C. BELL-RINGER
For every $10 you spend at WalMart, you receive a coupon for $0.20 off anything in the store. How much must you spend to accumulate enough coupons to buy a DVD for $9.99?
D. SET
"You Say, I Say" using: y = 4x, y = 3x -2, y = |x| - 4
E. PROCEDURES
1. First thing to do . . .
Review the terms related to functions: ordered pair, relation, function.
Define independent and dependent variables. (The value of the dependent variable depends on the value of the independent variable.)
Example: To prevent overproduction, the government gives farmers $500.00 for every acre of farmland not planted with corn, cotton, wheat, or soybeans. How much will a farmer in Marshall County receive if the farmer has 1,000 acres of farmland?
[Answer: It depends on how many acres he doesn't plant.] Which is the dependent variable, dollars of acres?
Example: Lebron James signs a new contract guaranteeing him $15,000,000 annual salary plus a commission of $3,000 for every point he scores. How much money does he earn in the first year of the contract? [Answer: It depends on how many points he scores.] Which is the dependent variable, points or dollars?
In each of the examples, what is the rule -- the function -- that describes what's happening?
2. Guided practice (write on board before class starts)
Take 5-6 minutes to write a scenario involving a dependent and independent variable. When you finish, we'll discuss each other's example.
3. Independent practice (if time)
p.395, #22-25
F. ASSESSMENT
Informal: Teacher will monitor individual students’ work on in-class guided practice activity and provide assistance as necessary.
Formal: Students will be assessed in a quiz given 6/23/08, and grade will be recorded in book.
