Mr. Nelson Biology I 50 Minutes
Objective: The student will demonstrate the qualities of lipids as they relate to the cell membrane (Biology, 3.f).
Materials: Writing utensil, overhead, paper, grapes, colorless soda, sharp knife, procedure handout
Bell Work: Quiz on the previous day’s lesson
Set: What is a lipid? Where can we find them? What are some of the properties of lipids? Have the students come up with examples. They will probably come up with examples that are visible. Discuss the reason for those visible properties (chemical composition). Today we will look closer at the function of lipids. For one, they play a very important role in our cells. But it is difficult for us to see that…instead we will be using some household items to demonstrate the nature of the cell membrane.
Procedure:
1. Cover the basic structure of the cell membrane and give notes for vocabulary (hydrophilic, integral proteins, etc.)
2. Explain lab assignment and review the safety procedures.
a. The lab guideline can be found in “A Demo a Day” for Biology. Contact pete.nelsonpm@gmail.com if unable to find a copy.
3. Hand out the guideline/worksheet.
4. Observe students as they work – don’t reveal why the grapes behave as they do as of yet. Have them make guesses on their own. Procedural and reflective questions should be included in the worksheet passed out to the students.
5. Discuss the experiment. Why did the grapes behave the way they did?
Closure: Review the properties of water v lipids. State the objectives. Preview the next lesson.
Assessment:
Objective: The student will demonstrate the qualities of lipids as they relate to the cell membrane (Biology, 3.f).
Formal: The student will complete a reflective worksheet (M) on their properties of lipids activity (C). The worksheet will be graded and recorded in the grade book.
Informal: The teacher will observe student progress and verbally review (M) throughout the properties of lipids activity (C).
