Name: Peter Nelson

Subject: Biology I (The Cell)

Period: 1st

Approximate Time: 50 minutes

Objectives:

The student will list and define all of the major organelles in a eukaryotic cell (3.c).

The student will identify the correct placement of all the major organelles in a eukaryotic cell (3.d).

Materials:

Notebook paper, pencils and pens, whiteboard and whiteboard markers, overhead projector, and overhead markers.

Set:

Last Friday we got the chance to construct a cell and found out how important it is to understand the things that make up a cell and what their function is in order to understand the cell itself. We will take closer look at organelles and their differences but first I want to know that everyone in this room has a solid grasp of their names and function. So today we will...List Objectives. Go over quiz.

Procedure:

1. Cover the organelles that haven’t been explicitly covered. See organelle definitions for reference. Do on overhead.

2 .Have the students list as many organelles as they can with their corresponding function (5-6 minutes).  While this is going on you can draw a cell on the board.

3.  Have the students come up to the board and correctly draw and label the organelle within the cell.

4. Ask if there are any questions. Erase the board except for the cell (erase labels) Take the quiz’s and throw them away. Explain that you won’t be grading the quiz’s but will be grading the assignment you are about to give them. Read off a list of organelles and have them write them down. Next explain that they will define those organelles and then  place them just as they did before up at the board. (10 minutes or so)

5. Collect the new quiz.

Closure:

OK so now how many people feel pretty confident that they have good idea of the organelles and their function? Right, you were all able to (state objectives) It is very important that we get that our of the way. We now have a broad idea of a cell. Tomorrow we will get a chance to look more closely at them. Specifically, we will be examining the cell membrane and its function.

Assessment/Evaluation:

Objective: The student will list and define all of the major organelles in a eukaryotic cell (3.c).

Informal: The teacher will listen to students contribute to definitions in lecture.

Formal: The teacher will collect the student’s quiz administered at the end of class and record the grade in the grade book.

Objective: The student will identify the correct placement of all the major organelles in a eukaryotic cell (3.d).

Informal: The teacher will ask the students to come to the board to identify organelle placement.

Formal: The teacher will collect the student’s quiz administered at the end of class and record the grade in the grade book.
